Racing Insights: hardware and software solutions for electronics in motorsports

Modern race cars are highly complex vehicles. A wide variety of electronic control units and systems make it possible to continually push the boundaries of vehicles and drivers. Bosch supports its customers and partners with an ecosystem of electronic components that are both at the cutting edge of technology as well as easy to use and integrate.

Why an all-in-one solution combining hardware, software, and services is necessary

In racing, every second counts. One requirement for success is a finely tuned interplay between various components. As race cars become increasingly complex, this becomes more challenging, as different powertrains or traditional internal-combustion engines now have to work together with modern electric motors. Add to that the demands of racing series and technical acceptance.

The electronic solutions from Bosch encompass a wide, innovative portfolio of engine and vehicle control units that make the work of development engineers or trackside racing engineers easier – and can mean the difference between victory and defeat for the driver.

In our TechTalk, expert Mikko Kataja explains the importance of Bosch electronics in modern racing.

sensor malfunction

Use case: sensor malfunction

During the qualifying process, the ABS indicates a malfunction on the driver display: the velocity sensor on the right rear wheel is not connected correctly. These data are simultaneously sent across the electrical system and the telemetry modem to the engineers in the box as well as the responsible parties across the world via RaceConnect. The response is immediate: The driver is prompted to drive directly to the box, where the disconnected sensor can be reconnected. The driver uses the steering wheel buttons to navigate the user interface menu on the display to clear the fault memory. Thanks to quick identification and resolution of the fault, only minimal drive time is lost.

The complexity of ever-evolving motorsports must be tempered by a simple and intelligent ecosystem.

Spotlight: RaceCon

Spotlight: RaceCon

Bosch Motorsport hardware components, such as ECUs, displays, and data loggers, are configured and calibrated using a central tool: RaceCon. This programming tool allows for adjustment of device software in the laboratory, at the test bench, and on the racetrack. The software is specialized for each individual product and is continuously improved. RaceCon's many functions make it possible to personalize each project. RaceCon simplifies the integration process for the manufacturer and enables easier overall operation of the vehicle.
